ISSUE: Increasing numbers of U.S. births are to single mothers.  Births to single teen mothers are common.  Too often, the young mother is left on her own to take care of her parenting responsibilities. This, combined with other life circumstances, typically means she doesn’t get adequate education, access to well paying jobs, or appropriate parenting support.

CHALLENGE: These mothers and their children represent a wasted resource. There are government and private programs that provide opportunities for education and employment. Despite these programs, however, a significant number of the mothers remain unassisted. The inability for them to move forward is due to a variety of reasons related to their environment, low self esteem, distrust, and dependency on exploitive or incapable partners.

OPPORTUNITY: Experts agree that the path to economic and social success begins within the young mother. She will not be able to take advantage of opportunities unless she sees herself in a positive, accomplishment-oriented way. The challenge is how to break through the barriers to her taking positive action. With motivation and the appropriate support resources, young single mothers can become self-sufficient. This translates into greater personal success for her and a better chance that her child will have positive outcomes.

FRESH START APPROACH: Wellness Genetics science provides new insights into how a person compares with others in normal activities.  FRESH START PROGRAM: Fresh Start is a three part program.

• Part one is the wellness genetics DNA profile. The test looks at 100 different genetic markers that are associated with normal activities and life. It was created by AlphaGenics, Inc., and is marketed under the brand name MyGene DaVinci.
• Part two is wellness genetics mentoring. This mentoring/coaching process is provided by specially trained mentors. The Fresh Start Wellness Genetic Mentor has two functions. One is to explain and clarify the science. The other is to help the woman sift through her action-options to make the choices that make the most sense to her.
• Part three is connecting to community support resources, through a Fresh Start Community Resource Coordinator. The resources include schools and colleges, employers, health and wellness providers, and community volunteers to provide support for normal parenting and life activities.
